Generally Refugee detention centres are privately owned which meant that until recently when there were exposees we were unaware of the blatant basic human rights abuses occuring within these prison like compounds due to privacy of information. It has been stated that the conditions within the Christmas Island centre in particular are breaching United Nations agreements and as it is we currently do not meet the quota set of limits that allow refugees into the country. These people where they are geniune refugees deserve basic human rights that is set out across the U.N and not to be criminalised for desperate measures taken as the process for offshore refugee approval is time consuming and difficult and these people are in desperate need of being granted refugee status. -Sashkwa- April 05, 2010 - 23:22

You complete douchebag. Refugees are escaping a wartime situation that they did not cause, or a corrupt government, or a situation like these. In Australia, we are lucky. In Australia, we can sit at home for three weeks while some immigration papers are processed, a proper passport is obtained, a Visa is successfully applied for, and so on and so forth. If the government is coming after you, you are not going to, while running, wait around another three weeks while the very government that is persecuting you refuses to process your form. In Australia, this does not happen. But in the countries that these people are fleeing, it does. As a consequence, they are only "illegal" as a triviality. The vast majority of immigration processing lets these people in anyway. So it is not fair to say that these people complaining about their conditions is the same as a criminal complaining about their jail sentence, because for the vast majority of these people, the only "crime" they have committed is having recognised a regime as corrupt and trying to get the fuck out of there. Wouldn't you? And "recreating the havoc the filled the country THEY JUST LEFT"? Firstly, that's grammatically incorrect, it should be "...the havoc THAT filled the country..." And secondly, you show a vast misunderstanding and lack of comprehension of the land they have left. They risk death in their homelands, many of them. They risk torture. And you say that a political protest recreates that? I reiterate my point: you complete douchebag. Cheers, and good luck in your other pursuits. Yeah I may have been vulgar in the way in which I addressed these people. But at what point on this site did you start thinking I was interested in being nice and fluffy about anything? Including the opinion I have of myself. Thanks for telling me things I already know and thanks for pointing out a spelling mistake I had overlooked in the editing process. Anger = loss of focus. All very helpful. I understand your view and you're right in some way. But within any case it does come down to the individual situation. If you think every refugee has legitimate intentions for their new future, then I honestly feel you should quit eating the fairy bread. I also feel if the situation they just came from was terrible... then that only further means they have nothing to complain about. Death or detention - it's that simple... I'd hate to put myself in the same situation, but I can't - so I won't. If the time arises that I need to I'll deal with that then and if I end up protesting about a situation I got myself into at that point then you're welcome to come back on whatever site I'm running at the time to tell me I was DEFINITELY wrong. I do appreciate your personal remarks because they have now forced me to question myself and the way I think about things... haha... Nah, I'm just fucking with you. They get extra benefits than actual Australian Citizens. They get housing, where as the unemployed and homeless citizens of this country come last. And no I dont have pitty for homeless people but a country should look after their own before any other cunt comes in here. They should not be complaining. You wanna come here in my country, then you deal with what you get. I still say they get too much. They should e given a blanket and an enclosed cement cell they have to share with 20 others.
